Fandom: The world that God only knows but then again;


After watching the Anime “The World that God only knows” , the story depicts a Otaku that is obsessed with video games and escapes reality through His gaming activities. The anime asks questions about the world surrounding us , this doesn’t necessarily mean just Otaku culture but culture of obsessive portions and this is because of my shear horror of discovering that an Otaku’s stalk Voice actor’s ?? I was shocked because I couldn’t not believe that Japanese culture was being exploited like this, I have heard many news articles about fandom which the obsession over reality and fantasy are merged to the point of the celebrities are harassed but I always thought that Otaku or anime fan’s where refined individual’s. I think that fans sometimes try to reflect too much of themselves into a character which stories/ narratives allow to do but in reality you need to the know the boundaries of individualism.


Criticism of  Otaku as immature or unable to distinguish the real from the imaginary. But in my experience, there are few individuals more strict about that distinction than the Otaku (pp.227 ,  Robot Ghost and Wired Dreams)

The article states that some Otaku fans are trying to escape reality but this is not a subject that is strictly aimed toward Otaku fan’s, obsession is something that can be apart of any cult/cultural fad. I am talking about collect-ability or ownership: If you bought everything piece of clothing that Audrey Hepburn own in Her life time, You have not suddenly become Audrey Hepburn but You are showing your appreciation to the star, You may have a understanding and appreciation towards that person.

Understanding: What I mean by this is understanding why You like what you like and also understanding that not everyone else appreciates your taste; I think that fandom like religion, You have many different Genre’s in film or with music and not everyone like the same Genre which is a person chose.  Also it is understanding that ownership of a product such as a book or DVD doesn’t mean that you have ownership over the people involved with the production.

It is not easy to locate a sexual object in fiction itself : that represents a taste for something far more direct than we see in fetishism of ordinary fan mania. Many Otaku actually have imagined sexual relationships with their favorite manga and anime protagonist (pp.228,Robot Ghost and Wired Dreams)

This paragraph talks about unnatural attachment which the characters which statistically speaking in every cultism there will be a percentage of people who would refer to themselves to hard-core cultists. now the understanding of cult-dom I thought necessary to explain but never-the -less I don’t  think cultist are effect by the cult chooses to the degree of stalking and harassing their idols. in fact this is a negative reaction to a positive subject, it makes no sense to attract negative emotions towards something you say you love or admire. if you read a book , you enjoy that book but at the very end of that book the was one sentence that you did not like, even though the book was the best book you read and it made you think about society or yourself in a different prospect would you burn that book because of that one sentence. would you tell others that the book is bad because of that one sentence and that they should burn their copy book. this is a childish reaction, so if a celebrity is dating another celebrity why do people reject this notion? you like them for whatever they do whether that is acting or singing ; so why does the person that they date effect you?

The characters of K-on look and act like the actresses that do the voice acting which I found to be  a bit of a bizarre but all Anime are designed so that the viewer can interact with the content on a personal level.  The interesting thing about K-on is that it combined elements to music to the story-line, also the voice actors are musically involved in their real lives and the story seems to represent their interaction with each-other in a everlasting friendship; the story maybe interpreted in many different ways but that would be going off track : prospective vs opinion.  Collecting objects toward the Anime is showing appreciation toward the anime you like but I was shocked to learn that Aki Toyosaki was stalked by an Otaku fan because;

  1. I don’t understand why celebrities that people admire are being attacked for living their lives
  2. I don’t understand why Aki Toyosaki was stalked; if a fan saw her, why not talk to her or ask for an autograph ?
  3. I don’t understand the mentality of the fan; It seems that they were imposing their ideals on Aki Toyosaki and became slightly physiologic because reality was not something that they could accept
  4. I don’t think it matter who a celebrity dates because there will always be someone who has a problem with there chooses
  5.   Celebrity’s have millions of fans so it would be impossible to date everyone of them
  6. The celebrity may be an amazing person but there is no saying that you will ever meet that celebrity in your lifetime so why imposes unnecessary stress there lives when it maybe hard enough ? ( example: Judy Garland)
  7. There are so many Anime’s to watch, Manga’s to read, Japanese films to see, Pocky to eat, Plush’s to collect long with other memorabilia and costumes to wear. I thought that Otaku loved the products that they buy so how can a Otaku destroy the merchandise that they love so much ?  Where do the boundaries lay for peoples obsessions? When do obsessions become serious or almost threatening ? In theory Otaku’s should love the Stories that they are fans of, they should love the characters in the narratives , they should the love the actor or creator to such amazing products but above all they should love the voice actors in an none creepy homage that doesn’t interfere in the lives because they bring your characters to life.


Loving Technology: When a Man Loves a Robot ???


The series questions the construction of Human identity , not only in relation to the technology that the plot and imagery insistently privilege but  also in relation to the nature of reality itself. Proving more riddles than solutions,the series takes the viewer on a journey into inner and outer reality before ultimately leaving both its character and it’s audience floating in a sea of uncertainty. The idea behind any Anime Which has a mecha theme is to design a Robot that captures the audiences imagination and the audience realty merges with the narrative of the Anime series. like any other consumers industry the audience is compelled to buy the merchandise at any cost, Me as a consumer like many other consumers have a type of relationship with the products that I buy, they have a meaning or purpose whether that be a memory of why the individual buys the product or something you remember from your childhood???Disney is a prime example of a global product that has been successful with selling products for generations an will continue to do so for generations to come. Gundam and Transforms are the most widely spread Mecha product that has come from Japan but like Hollywood; Japan also look at the sell ability of Each Anime’s themes and try to make as much profit as possible which is understandable. Fans are paying extra to be apart of a community of people, whom have similar interests to them, this proves there loyalty and obsession to the products but every Cult have there own little rituals that other people that are not apart of the group may think are bizarre.

The Two Japanese anime under consideration here are no exception Evangelion explores the aspects of human sexuality involving bodily conjoining, intimacy, and penetration/ permeability played out through a cyborg subject. (pp 177, Robot Ghosts and Wired Dreams)

Science-fiction media have always been fascinated with the concept of robots that look like humans and now scientists in Japan trying to perfect Human looking robot. Now in cyberpunk Media it is constantly questioning Humans attachment with technology but the irony is amount to Merchandise that surround a concept that is based on obsessive behavior but technology is something that is apart of everyday life and would be impossible to criticize. The internet is a platform that allows the consumer to buy more of what they want, which 10 years ago would have been impossible to purchase and would have had to wait a lot time to purchase.

Cyberpunk: the story of the machine


Akira represents a fusion of contemporary Art – Anime, Manga, cinema, digital graphics. and Cyberpunk narrative- with contemporary themes, addressed to all global audience. the effects of this new  ” global” Japanese Science Fiction continue to propagate (ix, Robot Ghosts and Wired Dreams)

Rebellious teenagers and a government that suppress its people; that pretty much sums up Akira but this theme runs though a lot of Japanese narratives. Cyberpunk is a series of different films or Anime’s that express people concerns about technology and the effects it has over society. Gurren Lagann is also about technology taking over the world but none of the society know the effects of technology because like the movie the time machine (1960), where the youth have no idea of the disasters of the past. In Gurren Lagann the youth are not rebellious but they strive for a better tomorrow , It have a more biblical theme like 20th century boys.

Now cyberpunk is not just about rebellious teenagers , it is also about the government that surround them and in Death Note the teenagers lash out against the government where as in Akira the teenagers are suppressed. In Garren Lagann it is   Kamina who is the sacrificial for humanity and in 20th century boys it is Kenji Endo who is the sacrifice.  the whole point of this is to have a  Christ like figure that guides the other characters to a better tomorrow and this is a theme that even being adapted into live action films.

All cyberpunk messages are the same, it is a type of Waring to the future, it is positive message even though the film are negative it is telling the audience the worst case . Cyberpunk story’s are warning of technology as in the effect of technology but Cyberpunk is not just an Asian concerns but a worldwide concept .

Godzilla : Boldly going into Science Fiction


The Japanese  monster film became the archetype for cheap, cheesy disaster movies because of the sort of culture and technological interference pattern that still characterize the reception of Japanese science fiction in north america today.(vii, Robot Ghosts  and Wired dreams)

The concept of Godzilla (1954) is similar to the concept of King Kong (1933) in the sense that both of the film have monsters destroying  a city and both films have a franchise. The aesthetic in the film are not as important as the over plot of the film because of the technology that was available at the time and Godzilla is a very politically themed movie which reflect of the end of the war. Giant monster movies are as popular today as there was in 1954 and these films are being reproduced or influencing similar themed  narratives. For example The Host (2006) and Cloverfield (2008) are both film about a giant monster that take over the city so the citizen have to escape. except from the fact that The host is made in Korea and Cloverfield is made in America ; they are the same movie pretty much.  Now Japan 28 Godzilla movies and 4 television show according to the Wikipedia page but this doesn’t include the movies that Godzilla inspired  or the other film in the Godzilla franchise. America are planning on doing a reboot of their 1998 attempt of the film, the film is release on 16th may 2014 but there are a few other rumored american remake film like Death Note and Akira which have remained to be seen or not ??


In the Godzilla films we see another common characteristic of Japanese popular narrative: Both the destructive and potentially productive aspects of technology are explored.(PP172, Robot Ghosts and Wired Dreams)

The destruct behavior that the article discusses is not just from Giant monster but all Japanese films have element of destruction whether it be the destructive behavior of the youth like in Suicide Circle which is a physiological movie or the destructive force comes from an unknown source like in a horror movie like in Audition where the destructive behavior comes from an unlikely source. The concepts and theme’s from Japanese films are hard to translate because they filled with cultural reference’s.  Cloverflield and The Host are two good example of films that work well; they have not taken the name away from the Japanese classic. The cultural expectation for a Godzilla movies will be quite high from people who love Japanese movies and this means staying true the original.
